Ukraine's Defense Minister Resigns Amid Rift with Military Chief

Date:

(MENAFN) Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov confirmed Wednesday that he is leaving his post, ending a tenure marked by sweeping military procurement and defense technology reforms.

Fedorov announced the move on Facebook, pointing to the initiatives he oversaw during his time in office. "It has been a great honor to serve the Ukrainian people as defense minister," he wrote.

The resignation surfaces amid mounting reports of friction at the top of Ukraine's military establishment. Lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezniak said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told members of his Servant of the People party that Fedorov had clashed for some time with Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and the broader armed forces leadership.

Ukrainian media outlets further reported that Zelenskyy told lawmakers "ideally, both Fedorov and Syrskyi should be dismissed, but that he cannot do so now." The same reports indicated Zelenskyy faulted Fedorov for stalled reforms to Ukraine's territorial recruitment and social support centers, commonly known as TCCs.

Sources inside the ruling parliamentary faction told Ukrainska Pravda that Fedorov will stay on within the president's team despite his departure from the defense post — though his next role is expected to be clarified in the coming week.
