Ten EU Nations Call for Review of Planned Transport Carbon Charges
(MENAFN) Ten European Union member states have called for a review of a planned carbon pricing measure for transport fuels, arguing that the policy should be reconsidered amid ongoing economic and geopolitical pressures, according to reports released on Wednesday.
The countries said the introduction of the Emissions Trading System 2 (ETS 2) should be part of a broader assessment of the EU’s climate policy framework.
“Given the current economic and geopolitical circumstances, European citizens should not be burdened with new climate taxes. The ETS 2 system should therefore be included directly in the review and carefully reassessed,” the countries said in a statement.
The declaration was signed by representatives from Italy, Poland, Bulgaria, the Greek Cypriot Administration, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.
The European Commission is expected to unveil its proposed review of the ETS framework on Friday.
The EU’s emissions trading system currently requires sectors including electricity generation, industrial operations, aviation and maritime transport to pay for their carbon dioxide emissions.
