Algeria Sets New Electricity Demand Record Amid Severe Heat Wave
(MENAFN) Algeria registered its highest electricity demand on record Monday as an intense heat wave swept across large parts of the country, pushing power consumption to an unprecedented 21,870 megawatts.
According to reports, the state-owned electricity and gas company Sonelgaz said the latest figure exceeded Sunday's peak of 21,120 megawatts by 750 megawatts. It also surpassed the previous all-time record of 20,628 megawatts, which was set in July 2025.
The utility attributed the surge in electricity use to soaring temperatures and high humidity, which significantly increased demand for power nationwide.
Despite the record-breaking consumption, the company said electricity services remained stable across all provinces, with no supply interruptions reported.
According to reports, Algeria currently produces around 29,000 megawatts of electricity each day, leaving a surplus of more than 8,000 megawatts. Nearly 1,000 megawatts of that output comes from renewable energy sources, primarily solar power.
