Algeria Reaches Record Electricity Demand as Extreme Heat Wave Sweeps Country
(MENAFN) Algeria experienced its highest-ever electricity consumption on Monday as a severe heat wave affected large parts of the country, with demand reaching a record 21,870 megawatts, according to the state-owned electricity and gas company Sonelgaz.
The company said the new peak exceeded the previous day’s record of 21,120 megawatts by 750 megawatts and surpassed the earlier maximum of 20,628 megawatts recorded in July 2025.
Sonelgaz attributed the unprecedented rise in power usage to extremely high temperatures and elevated humidity levels, which have significantly increased electricity consumption nationwide.
Despite the exceptional demand, the company confirmed that electricity supplies remained stable across all provinces, with no reported outages.
Algeria currently produces approximately 29,000 megawatts of electricity daily, providing a surplus of more than 8,000 megawatts. Nearly 1,000 megawatts of this output comes from renewable energy sources, primarily solar power.
More than 95% of Algeria’s electricity generation comes from natural gas-powered facilities, while the country also supplies more than 500 megawatts of electricity each day to neighboring Tunisia.
The Algerian government has set a target of generating 15,000 megawatts from renewable energy sources, particularly solar and wind power, by 2035.
The record electricity demand coincided with an intense heat wave affecting much of Algeria, with temperatures rising above 45C (113F) in several coastal cities along the Mediterranean.
Civil protection authorities reported that more than 300 wildfires involving forests, vegetation areas, agricultural lands, and palm groves have been recorded since Thursday. Officials warned that ongoing drought conditions continue to increase the risk of further fires.
Algeria has faced repeated drought periods in recent years, resulting in lower dam and groundwater levels and contributing to more frequent and severe wildfire seasons.
