Abdul Hamid Aqil Al-Awak Elected Speaker of Syria’s New Parliament
(MENAFN) Syria’s newly established parliament has chosen legal expert and academic Abdul Hamid Aqil al-Awak as the speaker of the country’s first legislative body since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad government in late 2024.
According to reports, al-Awak won the position after receiving 99 votes out of 205 ballots cast in a competitive election. Moayad al-Qablawi came in second with 75 votes, while Mohammed Korj ranked third with 31 votes.
Born in the Ghwayran district of northeastern Syria’s Hasakah province, al-Awak completed his early education there before continuing his studies at the University of Aleppo, where he graduated from the Faculty of Law.
He later pursued a career in legal and administrative fields, eventually moving into judicial work before leaving Syria and settling in the southeastern Turkish city of Mardin.
Since 2016, al-Awak has worked as a professor at the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations at Mardin Artuklu University.
His academic research has mainly focused on Syria’s constitutional development and political future. He has trained members of the Syrian opposition’s Constitutional Committee and participated in preparing various political and constitutional studies.
Al-Awak has also collaborated with the civil society organization Stability Support Unit on research and publications examining local communities’ perspectives on Syria’s future constitution and the country’s potential social contract.
