Syrian Soldier Dies During Mine Clearance Mission In Aleppo
(MENAFN) A Syrian soldier was killed and two others were wounded on Thursday while taking part in an operation to remove landmines near the Tishrin Dam in Aleppo province, northern Syria.
The Defense Ministry’s media and communications department reported that the casualties occurred during mine-clearing activities in the eastern countryside of Aleppo near the dam, according to state media reports.
Explosive remnants of the long-running conflict in Syria continue to pose a serious threat across the country, with authorities frequently reporting deaths and injuries caused by leftover mines and unexploded weapons from the 2011-2024 war between the former government of Bashar Assad and opposition forces.
The conflict resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and injuries, while also causing widespread damage to infrastructure. The Assad government eventually collapsed after opposition groups entered Damascus on Dec. 8, 2024.
Government agencies and international organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, are still conducting operations in various parts of Syria to locate and remove mines and unexploded ordnance left behind by the war.
Data from monitoring groups indicates that unexploded weapons in Syria have caused the deaths or injuries of more than 13,000 people since 2011.
