Merz Says Ankara Summit Can Strengthen NATO Unity

Date:

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Wednesday that he believes the NATO summit in Ankara can open a new chapter for the alliance by reinforcing unity and cooperation between the United States and its European allies.

Speaking to reporters after arriving at the summit venue in the Turkish presidential complex, Merz said, “I am confident that, starting from Ankara, we will see a new spirit within NATO—one that makes the alliance stronger and more united.”

He said European NATO members are prepared to assume greater responsibility within the alliance and are substantially increasing defense spending to meet the commitments adopted during the 2025 NATO leaders' summit.

Reflecting on last year's decisions, Merz said, “Last year in The Hague, we decided to significantly step up our defense efforts — and we have delivered,” adding that alliance leaders, including US President Donald Trump, would assess the progress made during their discussions.

“We will make NATO more European so that it can remain transatlantic,” he stressed.
