German Drug Deaths Among Young People Nearly Double Since 2021
(MENAFN) Drug-related deaths have surged sharply over the past year, according to press reports published Tuesday.
In 2025, 528 people under the age of 30 died after using illegal drugs such as heroin or crack — a nearly 53% jump compared to 2021, a newspaper reported, citing figures from the Federal Criminal Police Office.
The trend is even more alarming among the youngest victims. Drug-related deaths in this group have effectively doubled: 106 people under 20 died in 2025, up from 54 in 2021. Overall, 2,150 people died last year from using dangerous illegal drugs.
Responding to the figures, Federal Drug Commissioner Hendrik Streeck told the newspaper: "2,150 drug-related deaths—and Germany is once again looking at the number with concern until it's forgotten the day after tomorrow. I find it alarming how much we've grown accustomed to this."
He added: "Nearly one in four drug-related deaths is now among people under 30 and among those under 20, as the number has nearly doubled since 2021. Four out of five die after using multiple substances."
Streeck explained that many victims mix prescription medications, alcohol, and illegal drugs without realizing the potentially fatal consequences of combining substances.
He called for "more prevention, earlier intervention, and a support system that reaches people in time."
