Severe Storm Hits New Zealand, Raising Flood, Landslide Risks

(MENAFN) A powerful storm is sweeping across New Zealand’s South Island, triggering “threat to life” warnings as authorities prepare for severe flooding, landslides, and hazardous river conditions, according to reports.

The national weather service MetService has issued rare red heavy rain warnings for several regions, including Marlborough, Canterbury, Dunedin, and Clutha.

Rainfall rates are expected to reach 15 to 25 millimeters per hour in some areas, especially in mountainous zones, Radio New Zealand reported.

Officials warned that the extreme weather could make roads impassable, disrupt transport, and cut off isolated communities.

In Dunedin, local authorities have advised residents to remain at home, avoid non-essential travel, and stay updated on official alerts. Flood defenses have been installed, sandbag collection points activated, and emergency shelters opened.

MetService also forecast heavy snowfall above 800 meters in parts of South Canterbury, while strong gale-force winds continue to batter coastal and exposed regions.

The low-pressure system is expected to linger until midweek before shifting northward, with potential impacts also forecast for parts of the North Island, including Wellington.
