Amarnath Yatra India's Most Revered Pilgrimage: LG Sinha

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday described the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra as a living embodiment of India's spiritual consciousness, cultural heritage and humane values, saying the annual pilgrimage stands as a unique model of coexistence and unity in diversity.

Addressing the valedictory session of an international conference on Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, organised by the Government Degree College for Women, Anantnag in collaboration with the district administration, the Lieutenant Governor said the sacred pilgrimage represents social unity, inner reflection and the shared values of humanity.

“We must preserve, enrich and pass on this great tradition to future generations. The sacred Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra stands for social unity and deep inner reflection. A journey of patience, prayer and connection with the divine, it reminds us that true spirituality is about exploring the light within,” Sinha said.

He said the participation of people from different faiths and communities in facilitating the pilgrimage over generations reflects a shared human consciousness that rises above the boundaries of religion, language and region.

“At a time when divisions appear to be rising in many parts of the world, Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra offers a unique model of coexistence. The pilgrimage conveys that the true purpose of faith is to bring people together. Baba Barfani's pilgrimage embodies the ideal of our civilisation that we call unity in diversity,” he said.

Highlighting the Yatra's contribution to the local economy, the Lieutenant Governor said thousands of families, including pony operators, shopkeepers, artisans, transport providers and hoteliers, depend directly or indirectly on the annual pilgrimage, making it an important driver of livelihoods and regional development.

He also stressed the need to balance development with environmental conservation and reiterated the administration's commitment to a zero-waste pilgrimage through waste recycling initiatives, organised waste collection networks and campaigns discouraging plastic use.

The Lieutenant Governor said several infrastructure improvements have been carried out over the past few years, including widening and illumination of the Baltal and Chandanwari tracks, deployment of ambulances at designated locations and the adoption of digital technologies such as online registration, RFID and GPS-based monitoring, surveillance cameras and modern communication systems to make the pilgrimage safer and more transparent.

Expressing confidence in the future of the pilgrimage, Sinha said the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra has the potential to emerge as a major centre of global spiritual tourism, introducing visitors from across the world to India's traditions of philosophy, yoga, meditation and spirituality while strengthening cultural diplomacy.

Zero Tolerance For Operational Lapses During Yatra: LG

LG directed officials to adopt a“zero tolerance” approach towards operational lapses during the forthcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra as he chaired a high-level review meeting in Pahalgam and inspected the Nunwan base camp to assess preparedness for the annual pilgrimage beginning on July 3.

Chairing the meeting attended by senior civil, police and security officials, the Lieutenant Governor undertook a comprehensive review of arrangements for the pilgrimage, including logistics, accommodation, healthcare, sanitation, power and water supply, road connectivity, RFID cards, functioning of joint control rooms, track maintenance and widening, construction of footbridges, setting up of langars, creation of holding areas, traffic management and security.

Directing all departments to ensure seamless arrangements and foolproof security, Sinha stressed the need for comprehensive planning to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the pilgrimage.

“Management of the Yatra requires a comprehensive, hybrid planning approach with an absolute zero tolerance policy for operational lapses. Operations must aggressively mitigate the risks associated with high altitudes, harsh weather and extreme crowd density,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor directed officials to establish weather-based evacuation protocols and strategically deploy Mountain Response Teams at critical points along the route. He also instructed that all transit tents undergo rigorous quality inspections and be equipped with functional fire extinguishers.

He further emphasised the use of real-time crowd analysis to identify and clear choke points, while directing authorities to enforce robust traffic management plans and designated parking zones to prevent congestion and ensure uninterrupted movement of essential supplies.

Sinha instructed all concerned departments and agencies to work in close coordination for timely completion of works and better delivery of services. He also directed the Border Roads Organisation to complete all allotted works before the commencement of the pilgrimage.

He asked officials to conduct regular on-ground inspections and continuous monitoring of works to address deficiencies immediately. Transit camps and halt points, he said, must have trained manpower along with reliable water and power supply to ensure the convenience of pilgrims and service providers.

During the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Anantnag briefed the Lieutenant Governor on the overall arrangements being made for the annual pilgrimage, while the Senior Superintendent of Police Anantnag gave a detailed presentation on the multi-layered security framework and other measures being put in place for the safety of pilgrims along the route.

Later, the Lieutenant Governor visited the Nunwan base camp, where he conducted a detailed inspection of accommodation blocks and other infrastructure being developed for the Yatra.

Reviewing the on-ground arrangements, he directed the concerned officers to expedite the remaining works while ensuring that quality standards, pilgrim safety, comfort and convenience are not compromised.

Speaking to reporters after the visit, Sinha said all preparations for the annual pilgrimage had been finalised.

“The Jammu and Kashmir administration, police, security forces, Government of India and the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board have finalised all preparations to ensure a safe and spiritually enriching experience for the devotees of Baba Amarnath. Local residents and all stakeholders are eager to welcome pilgrims arriving from across the nation,” he said.

The annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra will commence on July 3 through the twin routes of Pahalgam in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district amid multi-layered security and elaborate logistical arrangements.
