Drone Suspected to Carry Explosives Found in Estonia After Cross-Border Raid
(MENAFN) An explosive-laden drone was discovered in rural Estonia after a civilian reportedly came across the wreckage while mowing grass, according to reports.
The object, believed to be a Ukrainian UAV carrying around 5 kilograms of explosives, was found earlier this month in a field in Rõuge municipality, roughly 40 kilometers from the Russian border, as stated by reports citing local officials.
Harrys Puusepp, bureau chief at Estonia’s Internal Security Service, confirmed that the drone was located on June 10 but was only made public later due to ongoing military exercises.
He said that parts of the drone were scattered across the area, with some fragments found in a tree, suggesting it had fallen from above.
“The person discovered a drone in taller grass while mowing. Some parts of the drone were also found in a tree, so it had apparently fallen from there,” he said, adding that the area was quickly secured and no civilians were placed at risk.
As stated by reports, officials believe the drone may have been involved in activity linked to a June 3 Ukrainian strike operation targeting Russian territory, during which air alerts were issued across parts of the region.
At the time, Estonia’s military reportedly scrambled aircraft and issued public warnings, although authorities later stated that no direct air threat had been detected.
Some residents in Võru County later told local media they had heard unusual noises around the time of the incident, which they believed may have been connected to drone activity.
