Czech Republic to Ban Student Phones in Schools from 2027
(MENAFN) Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis announced that sweeping new legislation restricting mobile phone use in schools will come into force in September 2027, marking a significant shift in national education policy.
In a video message posted on US social media platform X, Babis revealed he had reached a formal agreement with Education Minister Robert Plagaon on a bill that would regulate how and when students may use mobile devices on school grounds.
Under the proposed law, mobile phones would be banned from classrooms entirely, with the restrictions applying to all students of compulsory school age. Crucially, Babis confirmed the prohibition would not be limited to lesson time alone — it would remain in force throughout breaks between classes as well.
The announcement follows remarks made by the prime minister last week, in which he signaled that the government was actively drafting legislation to remove phones from classrooms as part of a broader drive to strengthen the learning environment.
Under the current framework, individual schools retain the authority to set their own rules regarding student mobile phone use during school hours — an inconsistency the new law is designed to eliminate.
The planned legislation is set to establish a uniform national standard and will take effect at the start of the 2027–2028 academic year.
