Tesla on Autopilot Kills Woman After Crashing Into Texas Home

(MENAFN) A woman was killed Friday night after a Tesla allegedly operating in self-driving mode veered off the road and plowed into a residential home in Katy, Texas, local authorities confirmed.

The crash occurred at approximately 8 PM local time when a Tesla Model 3, driven by Michael Butler, reportedly drifted out of its lane, left the roadway, and struck a brick residence, according to a media report citing investigators.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Butler was operating the vehicle "with an automated driving assistance system" at the time of the incident.

"Butler's Tesla entered through the brick residence, at a high rate of speed, and struck M. Avila who was inside the residence," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Avila was airlifted to a nearby hospital but was subsequently pronounced dead, investigators said.

Butler sustained injuries in the crash but showed no signs of intoxication and has been cooperating fully with investigators, authorities added.

The investigation remains active and no charges had been filed as of Saturday afternoon.
