French LNG Tanker Completes Strait of Hormuz Transit
(MENAFN) A French-flagged liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker has become the first vessel of its kind from France to pass through the Strait of Hormuz since the outbreak of the Iran–US conflict, according to maritime tracking reports.
The tanker, Mraikh, which was carrying LNG cargo from Qatar, successfully exited the Gulf and continued its voyage toward Pakistan after transiting the strategically important waterway. The vessel is chartered by QatarEnergy and operated by a French subsidiary of a Norwegian shipping company.
The crossing comes shortly after the finalization of a 14-point memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran that is intended to reduce tensions and help restore maritime traffic in the region.
Commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been heavily affected since the conflict began. Reports indicate that vessel traffic through the corridor fell dramatically, with daily transits dropping by more than 90% compared with pre-conflict levels.
Before hostilities disrupted maritime activity, roughly 130 ships were passing through the strait each day. During the first 100 days of the conflict, however, only about 1,000 vessels reportedly used the route, averaging around 10 daily crossings.
Shipping companies operating in the area have adopted various risk-mitigation measures, including routing vessels through designated channels and, in some cases, limiting the visibility of tracking data while transiting the region.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints, connecting major Gulf energy producers to international markets and serving as a critical route for global oil and natural gas exports. The successful passage of the *Mraikh* may be viewed as an early sign of gradually improving navigation conditions following recent diplomatic developments.
