Denmark Sends 850 Troops to Latvia in NATO's Eastern Defense Push
(MENAFN) Denmark will dispatch 850 soldiers to Latvia this autumn under NATO's rotational deployment framework, following parliamentary authorization secured Wednesday, a public broadcaster reported.
The Danish parliament's Foreign Policy Committee granted its approval during a formal session attended by Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Defense Minister Jeppe Bruus — a move that clears the final political hurdle for one of Copenhagen's most significant military commitments to the alliance's eastern flank.
"We have received the committee's support to deploy the Danish battalion in the autumn. It is important for us to take part in the deterrence efforts directed at Russia," Bruus told reporters after the meeting.
Beyond the troop deployment, lawmakers also greenlit a separate Danish mine-clearance contribution to the region — a specialized capability increasingly in demand across NATO's northeastern theater.
"We have also received the committee's backing to send a Danish mine clearance unit. It will take part in mine clearance operations," Bruus said.
The twin authorizations form part of NATO's broader strategy to reinforce its eastern perimeter as security anxieties tied to Russian aggression continue to shape alliance priorities across the Baltic region.
