Slovenia President Warns Against Threats to Democracy

(MENAFN) Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar on Wednesday pledged to speak out against any threats to the country’s constitutional order, institutional independence or fundamental rights, while stressing the importance of monitoring violations of international law, including those occurring in Gaza, according to media.

Speaking at a reception held at the Presidential Palace in Ljubljana, where she welcomed Prime Minister Janez Jansa and members of his newly formed government, Pirc Musar reaffirmed her commitment to defending democratic principles and the rule of law.

“These values are neither left nor right for me… they are universal… they are my anchor, which I will not raise regardless of the direction of the daily political wind,” Pirc Musar said.

The president said she would continue to “raise the alarm” whenever she believes constitutional safeguards, the independence of institutions or basic human rights are being challenged.

Pirc Musar also emphasized that Slovenia should remain vigilant regarding breaches of international law and human rights worldwide, specifically referencing the situation in Gaza during her remarks.

She urged stronger cooperation between the governing coalition and opposition parties, calling for a political environment rooted in dialogue, mutual respect and democratic values.

Prime Minister Janez Jansa said his administration is assuming office during a period of significant challenges and pointed to foreign affairs, defense policy and demographic issues as key areas where cooperation with the presidency will be essential.

The exchange highlighted a shared recognition of the complex domestic and international issues facing Slovenia, while underscoring the importance of institutional cooperation in addressing them.
