Fatal Boat Collision off Croatia Leaves Three Dead, One Still Missing
(MENAFN) Three Czech nationals lost their lives and another remains unaccounted for following a maritime collision off the coast of Split in southern Croatia on Sunday, according to reports.
Authorities said the incident involved a Croatian domestic passenger catamaran carrying 118 passengers and seven crew members, which collided with a French-flagged sailing vessel carrying Czech tourists. The crash occurred within the Split maritime zone, between the islands of Šolta and Brač.
Officials from Croatia’s Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure stated that the collision happened around 11:30 a.m. local time (0930 GMT). After the impact, the sailboat reportedly sank.
A representative from the Split Harbour Master’s Office said a Croatian Navy underwater drone later located the wreck at a depth exceeding 50 meters. Recovery operations are expected to begin on Monday morning, as stated by local authorities.
Four other Czech citizens survived the accident. Three of them suffered minor injuries, while one remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to reports citing hospital sources in Split.
An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances that led to the collision.
