Putin Envoy Says Starmer Uses Ship Seizure to Distract from Domestic Issues
(MENAFN) A Kremlin envoy has accused UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer of using the interception of a suspected Russian-linked tanker as a political distraction from internal problems in Britain.
According to reports, Starmer announced on social media that UK forces had stopped a vessel allegedly tied to “shadow fleet” operations used to help Russia bypass Western sanctions on oil exports. The ship, identified as the Smyrtos, was reportedly traveling through the English Channel when it was boarded by UK marines.
The UK Defence Ministry said the tanker would be detained and monitored off the southern coast while investigations into its activities continue. Starmer described the operation as successful, claiming it dealt “yet another blow to Russia,” and shared footage appearing to show armed personnel boarding the vessel.
However, a Kremlin envoy dismissed the operation as politically motivated, arguing that it was intended to divert attention from domestic concerns such as immigration and crime. Writing on social media platform X, he said the UK leadership was attempting to create escalation abroad instead of addressing internal issues, using highly critical and inflammatory language in his remarks.
