Iraq Thwarts Assassination Plot Targeting National Security Chief
(MENAFN) Iraq's National Security Service announced Friday that its forces had successfully dismantled a plot to assassinate its director, Abdul Karim al-Basri, along with several other senior officers.
The agency identified the perpetrators in a formal statement, linking the cell to the so-called "Iraqi National Gathering for Liberation and Change" — a front organization for the outlawed Ba'ath Party.
Investigations revealed that the cell had moved well beyond the stage of incitement and threats, with operatives actively assigned tasks and weapons already secured in preparation for the assassination attempt, the agency said.
National Security Service units successfully tracked the cell's movements, identified its members, and apprehended all those involved, the statement added.
The Ba'ath Party, which ruled Iraq under former President Saddam Hussein, was constitutionally banned following his removal from power during the US-led invasion in 2003.
