US Says Iranian Drones Intercepted Near Hormuz as Maritime Tensions Persist
(MENAFN) US military forces intercepted and destroyed Iranian drones in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz after they were allegedly targeting commercial vessels, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), as cited in reports.
The incident comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran aimed at reaching an agreement to ease months of heightened tensions.
According to CENTCOM, the drones were launched in an apparent attempt to strike merchant shipping passing through the strategic waterway.
“Iran launched multiple one-way attack drones in an attempt to strike commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM said in a post on X. “US forces have downed all of them in recent hours as traffic flow through the strait continues unimpeded.”
The US military added that the shipping corridor remains open and operational for transit despite the reported incidents.
CENTCOM said the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes—continues to see movement, although maritime conditions in the wider region have been affected by ongoing tensions.
Separately, US President Donald Trump has claimed that US forces have assisted in escorting hundreds of vessels through the waterway, though no independent verification was provided in the report.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, and has been at the center of repeated security concerns during periods of regional escalation involving Iran and other actors.
