North Korea Rejects Denuclearization Goal, Slams US–South Korea Stance
(MENAFN) North Korea has stated that the issue of denuclearization is now “irreversibly finalized,” sharply criticizing recent US–South Korea discussions that reaffirmed the goal of eliminating Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons, according to state media on Sunday.
An unnamed spokesperson from North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, cited by a Korean news agency, dismissed the idea of disarming nuclear weapons as “an unreasonable talk and fantastic daydream,” referring to statements made by Washington and Seoul.
The comments followed a Nuclear Consultative Group meeting on Thursday, during which the US and South Korea reiterated their shared objective of North Korea’s denuclearization.
The spokesperson argued that criticism from the United States and its allies, as well as joint military cooperation described by Pyongyang as a nuclear threat, would not affect what it called North Korea’s irreversible status as a nuclear-armed state.
“The ‘denuclearization’ is an irreversibly finalized matter,” the spokesperson said.
North Korea also rejected a recent Extended Deterrence Dialogue between the United States and Japan, during which both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the “complete denuclearization” of North Korea.
