Sweden Deploys Jets Twice to Monitor Russian Aircraft Over Baltic Sea
(MENAFN) Sweden deployed fighter jets on two separate occasions Friday to identify and monitor Russian military aircraft operating over the Baltic Sea, according to reports from a public broadcaster.
The Swedish Air Force carried out the interceptions using JAS 39 Gripen jets after radar detection indicated Russian aircraft activity near Swedish airspace in both the northern and southern parts of the Baltic region.
A spokesperson for the Swedish Armed Forces, Hanna Heurlin, said the missions were part of routine air surveillance operations.
"We are constantly monitoring our airspace and surrounding area," she told the broadcaster.
Authorities confirmed that at no point was Swedish airspace violated during either incident.
During the operations, the Gripen jets tracked and visually identified the Russian aircraft before continuing to follow them until they moved a safe distance away from Swedish territory.
Reports said the Russian planes eventually headed toward Kaliningrad, the Russian exclave located on the Baltic Sea, after being monitored by Swedish forces.
