Casualties Rise After Devastating Earthquake Strikes Southern Philippines


(MENAFN) The number of people killed by the powerful earthquake that recently shook southern Philippines has climbed to 61, according to reports released on Saturday, while rescue teams remain engaged in search efforts across the worst-affected parts of Mindanao.

Authorities said the death toll increased after more victims were discovered in areas impacted by the disaster. Reports also indicated that 33 individuals remain unaccounted for, while 1,221 people have sustained injuries.

Emergency personnel continue conducting search, rescue, and recovery missions as they work through landslide-hit zones and collapsed buildings in an effort to locate survivors and retrieve those trapped beneath debris.

According to disaster management updates, the earthquake has affected approximately 553,068 residents throughout the Mindanao region.

Reports further stated that around 9,393 displaced people are currently staying in evacuation centers. Meanwhile, another 54,274 individuals have found temporary accommodation with relatives or friends outside officially designated shelters.
