(MENAFN) The US military has drawn up contingency plans to secure and extract Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpiles should a peace agreement with Tehran be finalized, media reported Friday, citing senior US officials.
According to the report, Pentagon planners have war-gamed scenarios in which American forces would support the Department of Energy in seizing and removing Iran's nuclear materials. One outlined scenario would deploy US troops across the Middle East to backstop a rapid-response operation, with specialized Department of Energy teams — including its Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) — entering Iran alongside US Special Operations forces and the Army's 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives Command.
The disclosure comes hours after a senior Trump administration official told reporters that a long-sought agreement to end the war with Iran could materialize within the "next few days."
The official stated the agreement "leads to the dismantling of the Iranian nuclear program," as well as the US "getting the enriched material."
The agreement stipulates that the enriched uranium would be destroyed within Iran and then transferred out of the country, the official said.
The developments signal accelerating momentum toward a potential landmark deal, even as significant gaps remain over the handling of Iran's nuclear stockpile — a sticking point Tehran has insisted must be resolved exclusively on Iranian soil.
