Trump Signs Memo to Modernize Cybersecurity Rules for NSS
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum Friday outlining a new governance framework for national security systems (NSS) that store and process classified information, in the most substantial overhaul of such rules in more than three decades.
The directive "establishes a clear structure, authorities, roles, and responsibilities for the governance of NSS and accountability to NSS cybersecurity requirements for its owners and operators," the White House said in a statement.
The memo reconstitutes the Committee on National Security Systems, modernizing it for the first time since the early 1990s, and assigns it the task of setting baseline cybersecurity standards for all NSS while strengthening coordination and accountability among federal agencies. The committee will issue binding security directives to system operators and foster inter-agency information sharing.
The director of the National Security Agency will chair the committee and will be empowered to "leverage the full technical power of the National Security Agency to provide advanced defenses and assistance in order to bolster the security of NSS across the U.S. government," the White House said.
