Nigerian Diplomat Named as UN Special Adviser on Africa
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Ahunna Eziakonwa of Nigeria as his Special Adviser on Africa, according to a UN statement released Friday.
Eziakonwa takes over from Cristina Duarte of Cabo Verde, for whom Guterres expressed gratitude, saying he "is grateful for her commitment and dedicated service to the Organization."
Currently serving as UN Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator, and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa at the UN Development Programme (UNDP), Eziakonwa oversees development support to 46 African nations working toward the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union's Agenda 2063. "Since 2018, she has helped shape UNDP's strategic approach to economic and political development across the continent," the statement noted.
Eziakonwa has also served as UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator, and UNDP Resident Representative in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Lesotho, and headed the Africa section at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in New York, managing operations spanning 15 African countries. She additionally held senior postings in Liberia and Sierra Leone during critical junctures in each country's history.
In addition to English and her native Igbo, Eziakonwa is fluent in Yoruba and has working proficiency in French.
