Shark Attack Leaves Woman Critical, Sydney Beaches Shut Down

(MENAFN) A woman was fighting for her life Saturday after a shark mauled her at one of Sydney's busiest eastern suburb beaches, triggering emergency closures across multiple nearby shorelines.

Rescue services were scrambled to Coogee Beach just before 11:15 a.m. local time after bystanders pulled the victim — believed to be in her 30s — from the water, media reported. The woman sustained serious lacerations to her leg and arm and was stabilized at the scene before being airlifted to hospital.

A surf rescue boat operator and a paddleboard rider worked in tandem to help bring the injured woman ashore. Multiple beachgoers reported sighting a shark in the vicinity moments before the attack.

Authorities immediately evacuated the water and shut Coogee Beach, along with all other beaches under the Randwick Council jurisdiction, as a precautionary measure. Closures are expected to remain in place until safety can be confirmed, as an investigation into the incident gets underway.
