UN Chief Names Ahunna Eziakonwa as New Special Adviser on Africa
(MENAFN) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has designated Ahunna Eziakonwa of Nigeria as his new special adviser on Africa, according to a statement issued on Friday.
Eziakonwa takes over from Cristina Duarte of Cabo Verde. The statement noted that Guterres "is grateful for her commitment and dedicated service to the Organization."
Highlighting her present responsibilities, the statement explained that Eziakonwa currently serves as UN assistant secretary-general, assistant administrator, and head of the Regional Bureau for Africa at the UN Development Programme (UNDP). In that capacity, she supervises assistance provided to 46 African nations working toward the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union's Agenda 2063.
"Since 2018, she has helped shape UNDP's strategic approach to economic and political development across the continent," it added.
The statement further indicated that Eziakonwa has held positions as UN resident coordinator, humanitarian coordinator, and UNDP resident representative in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Lesotho. She also served as chief of the Africa section at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in New York, where she directed operations across 15 African countries.
Additionally, Eziakonwa occupied senior leadership roles in Liberia and Sierra Leone during pivotal phases in the histories of those countries, the statement added.
