Countries Condemn Israel’s Moves Against UNRWA at UN Security Council
(MENAFN) A group of countries has condemned what it described as Israeli efforts to undermine the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), warning that its work is facing an “unprecedented campaign” during a high-level UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday.
According to reports, Kuwait’s representative spoke on behalf of the “Shared Commitments” group, saying Israel, as the occupying power, is attempting to restrict, discredit, and marginalize the agency’s operations.
The coalition highlighted the killing of 391 UNRWA staff members, calling it the highest number of aid worker deaths in UN history, and said the toll reflects the severe impact of the ongoing conflict on humanitarian operations.
The statement also condemned the destruction and seizure of UNRWA facilities, including a recent move to establish Israeli military infrastructure at one of the agency’s compounds in occupied East Jerusalem.
It further argued that such actions violate the UN Charter and international law, noting that Israel has obligations to facilitate humanitarian assistance under a 2025 advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice.
