FIFA President Urges Calm Amid World Cup Visa Concerns
(MENAFN) FIFA President Gianni Infantino has urged critics to “chill, relax” in response to growing concerns over visa and travel issues affecting the build-up to the 2026 World Cup, including the case of a Somali referee denied entry to the United States.
According to reports, Infantino made the remarks while speaking to journalists in Mexico ahead of the tournament, addressing questions about entry restrictions affecting officials, players, journalists, and fans.
He acknowledged that the situation involving Somali international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was “unfortunate,” while emphasizing that FIFA does not have authority over sovereign immigration decisions.
He said, “It is unfortunate as well what happened to Omar, the referee from Somalia. But again, we don't control everything... Maybe sometimes it's good as well to just, you know, chill, relax. We work on everything; we try to solve everything.”
After reporters raised broader concerns about travel restrictions and visa policies ahead of the World Cup, Infantino clarified that his comments should not be interpreted as suggesting inaction, stressing that FIFA continues to work on addressing related issues.
