UN Chief Renews Urgent Call for Release Of Staff Held in Yemen
(MENAFN) The UN Secretary-General has reiterated his demand for the swift release of dozens of UN and humanitarian workers held in Yemen, as the situation reaches the second anniversary of a large-scale arrest campaign carried out by the Houthi movement.
According to reports, the UN chief strongly criticized the continued detention of UN employees, alongside workers from NGOs, civil society organizations, and diplomatic missions who were detained in June 2024. He also pointed to earlier waves of arrests in 2021, 2023, and 2025, reaffirming his opposition to these actions.
Reports indicate that a total of 73 UN staff members are still being held in Yemen. The UN highlighted the severity of the situation, stating that "remain arbitrarily detained in Yemen," it said. "One UN staff member has died while in detention, and several others are reportedly being held without communication with their families or colleagues."
The organization stressed that these detentions constitute violations of international law and warned that they have "severely" disrupted humanitarian and development efforts aimed at assisting millions of people in need across the country.
