Pope Calls for Expanded Legal Migration Routes During Visit to Canary Islands
(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV has urged European governments to take stronger action on migration, emphasizing the need for safe and legal pathways for migrants and warning against what he described as growing indifference to deaths at sea.
Speaking at the port of Arguineguin on Gran Canaria, a major entry point in Spain for migrants arriving from West Africa via the Atlantic route, the pontiff called for a collective reflection by governments and the international community on their response to migration flows.
As stated in his remarks, he said: “We cannot get used to counting the dead.”
He further stressed the importance of ensuring human dignity through structured migration systems, calling for legal and safe routes, coordinated rescue operations, stronger international cooperation against trafficking networks, and improved protection for victims. He also emphasized the need for integration policies and conditions that allow individuals to live with dignity in their countries of origin.
The pope also urged countries of origin, transit, and destination to share responsibility in addressing migration challenges and dismantling criminal organizations that exploit vulnerable people.
He warned that Europe risks normalizing deaths in both the Mediterranean and Atlantic migration routes, describing these waters as “graveyards without tombstones.”
