Israeli Police Detain Three Ultra-Orthodox Protesters in Jerusalem
(MENAFN) Israeli police said Wednesday that three ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters were arrested following confrontations with security forces during demonstrations in West Jerusalem opposing the detention of Haredi Jews who reject mandatory military service.
The protests were sparked by the detention of several Haredi men who were arrested last week after attempting to force their way into the residence of Israeli Supreme Court Deputy President Noam Solberg. The action was part of a protest against the recruitment of yeshiva students, who study religious texts in traditional Jewish educational institutions.
According to police, demonstrations took place at multiple sites across Jerusalem, including near the Russian Compound prison, where tensions escalated and unrest broke out.
Authorities said protesters blocked major roads, disrupted traffic, attacked police officers, threw objects, and ignored orders issued by law enforcement personnel.
Police stated that officers intervened to clear the roads and disperse the crowds, using stun grenades and mounted units to restore order.
