Egypt Calls on Nile Basin States to Expand Cooperation on Water Issues
(MENAFN) Egypt on Wednesday renewed its call for closer collaboration among Nile Basin nations, stressing the importance of reaching common ground on water-related matters in a manner that benefits all countries involved and avoids causing harm to any party.
The position was highlighted during a meeting in Cairo between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and visiting Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi, according to official statements.
The discussions come amid ongoing efforts to address differences surrounding water management and regional cooperation frameworks among Nile Basin states.
In late 2024, Egypt's irrigation minister welcomed a decision by the Nile Basin Initiative's ministerial council to begin a consultation process aimed at addressing the concerns of four countries that have not joined or ratified the Cooperative Framework Agreement.
According to reports, a consultative committee established to facilitate dialogue includes seven countries. The group consists of Egypt, Sudan, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which have raised objections to the agreement, while Uganda, Rwanda, and South Sudan are participating as mediators in the process.
