Sweden Abolishes Permanent Residency for Refugees
(MENAFN) Sweden’s parliament has approved a government-backed measure that eliminates the option of permanent residency for refugees and certain other migrant categories, according to reports.
Under the new legislation, asylum seekers and some migrant groups will only be eligible for temporary residence permits starting July 12.
While temporary permits have already been the standard practice in Sweden, the reform formally removes any future pathway for these groups to obtain permanent residency status.
Authorities clarified that individuals who already hold permanent residence permits will not be affected by the change.
The bill was passed earlier this week as part of a wider overhaul of the country’s migration system, reflecting a broader tightening of immigration policy in Sweden in recent years.
