Armed Encounter Reported Between Cargo Ship, Small Vessel Near Yemen
(MENAFN) A cargo vessel reported coming under approach from a small boat carrying six armed individuals while sailing approximately 88 nautical miles southwest of Balhaf, Yemen, on Wednesday, according to reports citing a UK maritime authority.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) stated that an exchange of fire took place between the two sides, involving the cargo ship’s onboard armed security personnel and those aboard the approaching craft.
“There was an exchange of fire between the small craft and the cargo vessel's Armed Security Team resulting in the small craft turning away,” the UK Maritime Trade Operations said in a statement.
Following the incident, the small boat reportedly withdrew from the area. Authorities have since opened an investigation into the event.
According to reports, no additional details have been released so far regarding the identity of the attackers or the extent of any damage or casualties.
