Iran Urges Reduced Electricity Use as Heatwaves Raise Risk of Grid Shortages

(MENAFN) Iranian authorities have cautioned that electricity shortages and potential rolling power cuts could occur during upcoming periods of extreme heat, urging citizens to reduce consumption to help prevent disruptions, according to reports.

Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said the severity of possible outages cannot be precisely predicted in advance, as it largely depends on how much electricity is used and the level of public cooperation in managing demand.

“The possible scale of power cuts during the coming hot days cannot be accurately forecast and depends directly on consumption patterns and public cooperation,” she said in remarks carried by state media.

She noted that the stability of the national electricity system should be evaluated from both production capacity and the measures implemented by the Energy Ministry. According to her, authorities are working to expand generation capacity, complete grid development projects, invest in renewable energy, and upgrade existing power plants to operate more efficiently.

Mohajerani also warned that excessive or “abnormal” electricity use could endanger both household supply and industrial energy security.

“The president has also emphasized the same principle: If each person can cut electricity consumption by 10%, the situation will improve,” she added.

Iran’s power sector is facing additional pressure amid broader regional tensions. Officials have stated that critical energy infrastructure has been affected by strikes in recent months targeting oil and gas facilities and parts of the electricity network.

Authorities also noted that more than 2,000 electricity infrastructure points have reportedly been damaged during ongoing regional hostilities, according to Iranian officials.

A temporary ceasefire agreement was reached in April, though subsequent negotiations reportedly stalled due to disagreements over implementation and developments in the region.
