Sanders Opposes NDAA Measure Deepening US-Israel Defense Ties
(MENAFN) US Senator Bernie Sanders said Monday that he intends to resist a provision in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would significantly deepen cooperation between the American and Israeli defense sectors.
Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Sanders argued that US support for Israel’s military should not continue at current levels.
"The United States should not be funding the Israeli military," Sanders said during remarks at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
He specifically criticized Section 224 of the annual defense legislation, which directs the US secretary of defense to appoint an executive agent tasked with coordinating joint initiatives between the United States and Israel. According to reports, those initiatives would include cooperation in defense technology research, development, testing, evaluation, integration and industrial collaboration.
"That is a provision which I will very strongly oppose," he said.
The event was briefly disrupted before Sanders turned to the issue of Israel’s war in Gaza.
According to reports, at least two pro-Palestinian demonstrators interrupted his remarks.
One protester shouted: "It's not just the Netanyahu government — it is the Israeli government that continues to commit genocide and apartheid. How dare you continue to support Israel when they keep killing Palestinians?"
According to reports, the interruption occurred early in the event before Sanders proceeded with his planned comments on developments in Gaza.
