Anwar to Tokyo University: AI Must Serve Humanity, Not Undermine It
(MENAFN) Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called on governments, academics, and industry leaders Tuesday to anchor artificial intelligence development in ethics, humanity, and moral values — warning that technological advancement must never be pursued at the cost of human dignity.
Delivering a special lecture at the University of Tokyo, Anwar acknowledged the transformative potential of AI and emerging technologies to reshape economies, elevate public services, and improve lives. He insisted, however, that innovation without a robust ethical compass risks doing more harm than good.
In a recording of his address posted on YouTube, Anwar argued that the true yardstick of progress is not raw technological capability, but the degree to which innovation genuinely serves people and advances the common good.
He contended that AI development must be underpinned by principles of justice, accountability, and compassion, stressing that policymakers, researchers, and business leaders bear a shared responsibility to shape technologies that reinforce — rather than erode — social cohesion and human values.
Anwar also pressed for deeper international cooperation in navigating the challenges and opportunities spawned by accelerating technological change, calling on nations to work in concert to ensure AI drives inclusive and sustainable development while upholding ethical standards.
On the sidelines of his Tokyo visit, Anwar met with the chairman of a peace foundation to exchange views on the protracted crisis in Myanmar. Discussions centered on fostering dialogue, advancing national reconciliation, and supporting a peaceful, Myanmar-led resolution to the conflict.
The two leaders also turned their attention to the Middle East, emphasizing the primacy of diplomacy, de-escalation, and adherence to international law, and underscoring the need for sustained global engagement to secure lasting peace and stability across the region.
