US Warplane Disables Oil Tanker in Gulf of Oman
(MENAFN) US forces struck and disabled a commercial oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman on Monday after the vessel allegedly defied an active naval blockade by attempting to reach an Iranian port, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed.
The Palau-flagged vessel M/T Marivex was intercepted while transiting international waters toward Iran, according to a CENTCOM statement.
"An F/A-18 Super Hornet from USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) fired a precision munition into the ship's engineering and steering spaces after the crew failed to comply with directions from U.S. forces," the command said, adding the vessel was "no longer" sailing to Iran.
CENTCOM first imposed the sweeping blockade on all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports on April 13, as part of broader pressure on Tehran amid an ongoing ceasefire between the two nations.
Monday's strike marks a significant escalation in enforcement activity. According to CENTCOM, US forces have now disabled 7 commercial vessels and redirected 134 others since the blockade took effect — underscoring the scale and reach of the US naval operation in the strategically vital waterway.
