Colombia’s Petro Sparks Diplomatic Row Over Peru Election Remarks
(MENAFN) Colombian President Gustavo Petro has triggered controversy after appearing to comment on Peru’s presidential election results before official counting was completed, prompting diplomatic attention in the region.
According to reports, Peru’s National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) indicated an “absolute statistical tie” in the vote count when Petro publicly reacted to an unverified claim suggesting victory for Roberto Sánchez of the Juntos por el Perú party.
On the social media platform X, Petro congratulated Sánchez and declared that conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori had been defeated.
“Progressivism has just won the Peruvian presidency and defeated the country’s most extreme right-wing force, represented by the Fujimori family,” Petro wrote.
The statement came amid ongoing uncertainty over the election results and was based on circulating online claims that had not been confirmed by official authorities.
Petro also described the contested outcome as a political vindication of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, with whom Sánchez is politically aligned.
