UN Chief Expresses Concern Over Closure of Gaza Crossings, Aid Suspension
(MENAFN) The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced serious concern over Israel’s decision to close key border crossings into Gaza and suspend the entry of humanitarian and commercial supplies.
According to reports, UN spokesperson Farhan Haq said during a press briefing on Monday that Israeli authorities had shut the Kerem Shalom crossing—previously the only functioning cargo entry point into Gaza in recent weeks—following missile attacks directed at Israel overnight.
He noted that while humanitarian workers were still permitted to retrieve cargo from the Palestinian side of the crossing, overall access had been severely restricted. The Rafah crossing was also reportedly closed.
Haq emphasized that Gaza’s population depends heavily on a continuous flow of aid and commercial goods from outside the territory.
“The UN and our humanitarian partners work hard to maintain a sustained and predictable flow of supplies despite restrictions,” he said.
He warned that such efforts cannot continue effectively if crossings remain shut, adding that the Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the suspension of aid deliveries through both Kerem Shalom and Rafah.
