US Restricts Visas for Nicaraguan Officials Over Indigenous Leader’s Death
(MENAFN) The United States has announced new visa restrictions targeting more than 100 Nicaraguan officials and their family members in connection with the death of indigenous leader Brooklyn Rivera.
According to reports, the US State Department said on Monday that the measures are linked to what it described as responsibility for Rivera’s death while he was in state custody.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that Washington would not overlook what he called accountability for the incident.
"The United States will not ignore the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship’s responsibility for the horrific death of political prisoner Brooklyn Rivera," Rubio said.
He also accused sanctioned official Lumberto Campbell Hooker of involvement in denying Rivera access to medical treatment during detention and later blocking his family from carrying out burial arrangements.
According to the statement, the latest actions bring the total number of Nicaraguan officials and relatives subject to US visa restrictions to more than 2,350, linked to alleged human rights abuses and political repression under the leadership of Rosario Murillo and Daniel Ortega.
Brooklyn Rivera, an indigenous activist and long-time political figure who had spent years in detention, died at the age of 73 while in custody.
