Iraq Reopens Airspace as Regional Tensions Show Signs of Easing
(MENAFN) Iraq resumed air traffic operations on Monday after authorities lifted restrictions on the country's airspace following Iran’s announcement that it was ending its military actions against Israel.
In a statement, Iraq’s Civil Aviation Authority said flights to and from all airports across the country would be allowed to operate again. The agency added that it would continue to closely monitor developments in the region and assess any potential risks.
The reopening comes after Iraqi authorities imposed a 72-hour airspace closure on Sunday in response to Iranian missile attacks targeting Israel. The strikes marked the first such incident since a ceasefire in the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran took effect on April 8.
Earlier on Monday, Iran announced the suspension of its attacks on Israel but warned that any further Israeli military action against Lebanon would be met with a “crushing” response.
Israel has not officially declared an end to its operations against Iran.
The latest escalation began on Sunday when Israeli strikes hit Beirut despite an existing ceasefire. Iran responded by launching missiles toward northern Israel, while Israel carried out multiple rounds of airstrikes against Iranian targets.
Regional tensions have remained high since late February, when US and Israeli attacks on Iran triggered retaliatory actions by Tehran against Israel and other countries in the region hosting American military assets.
