Moscow Alleges Foreign Influence, Opposition Pressure in Armenia Vote
(MENAFN) Russia on Monday alleged that Armenia’s parliamentary election, held over the weekend, took place under significant external influence and intense pressure on opposition groups.
In a statement, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, “On June 7, parliamentary elections were held in Armenia amid unprecedented pressure on the opposition and interference from the West, primarily the EU.”
Referring to preliminary election results, Zakharova argued that support for the ruling Civil Contract party had notably weakened. She claimed the outcome reflected what she described as a growing public desire in Armenia to maintain close relations with Russia and remain engaged in regional integration frameworks linked to Moscow.
She also asserted that both the election campaign and the voting process unfolded in an atmosphere of “harsh repression" by the Armenian authorities.
Zakharova further accused Armenia’s leadership of “flagrant violation of democratic principles and procedures for holding free elections” and of targeting individuals who support strengthening the country’s “vital union with Russia.”
“We hope that the Armenian authorities will be guided by approaches based on national interests," she said.
