I hold the Sir Bernard Lovell Chair of Astrophysics at the University of Manchester. I have a strong interest in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) and I chair the International Academy of Astronautics SETI Committee. I have published over 150 refereed journal papers and was previously Director of Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, General Director of ASTRON (The Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy) and Director of JIVE (Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe). In 2024, I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).
