NATO Jets Down Drone After Airspace Breach in Latvia
(MENAFN) NATO fighter aircraft participating in the Baltic Air Policing mission shot down a foreign drone after it entered Latvian airspace on Monday, Latvia’s armed forces announced.
In a statement, the National Armed Forces said the unmanned aircraft entered the country’s airspace in the Latgale region due to Russian electronic warfare activity. The military noted that NATO jets were deployed to intercept and destroy the drone.
Authorities had earlier issued warnings about potential airspace threats in the municipalities of Aluksne, Ludza, Balvi, and Rezekne. Later, the armed forces confirmed that the threat had ended.
The military emphasized that Latvian forces and their NATO allies continuously monitor the country’s airspace to maintain readiness and respond rapidly to any potential security risks.
Officials also pointed out that Latvia has reinforced air defense capabilities along its eastern frontier by deploying additional military units.
The armed forces warned that similar incidents involving foreign drones entering or approaching Latvian airspace could occur again as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues.
