German Substation Fire Triggers Power Outage, Arson Suspected
(MENAFN) Thousands of households in the southwestern German city of Reutlingen were left without electricity after a fire broke out at an electrical substation overnight, with authorities now investigating suspected arson.
Officials said Monday that multiple ignition points were discovered at the site, raising suspicions that the blaze was deliberately set.
According to city authorities, around 7,600 households were still without power on Monday morning, and a precise timeline for full restoration had not yet been confirmed. The outage began at approximately 1:45 a.m. local time (2345 GMT Sunday), when the Reutlingen-West substation went offline, German news agency dpa reported. At the peak of the disruption, about 20,000 customers were affected. By 7:15 a.m. (0515 GMT), electricity had been restored to roughly half of those impacted, including the city center and a local hospital.
A spokesperson for the regional grid operator Netze BW said there were strong indications of arson, noting that investigators found “three fire sites” along with damage to a fence and the area surrounding the facility.
Authorities from Baden-Württemberg’s state criminal police said they are “investigating in all directions” as the inquiry continues.
