I am a textile archaeologist and professional embroiderer specialising in the early medieval period (450-1100 CE). While I analyse and interpret textiles and embroidery, my main research focus is developing ways to interpret these objects within wider material cultures and using them to help us understand how early medieval people not only used but perceived and understood textiles and embroidery within their world(s). This includes the physical, metaphorical, secular and religious. I do this through scientific analyses; experimental archaeology; using theories such as object biography, entanglement and sensory archaeology; and interdisciplinary and collaborative working. I am also interested in working with colleagues across diverse disciplines to develop innovative research methods and ways of using early medieval textiles within modern society.

I undertake consultancy work, analysing finds for archaeology units and advising institutions and groups on various aspects of early medieval embroidery and textiles. I am part of the Bayeux Tapestry Scientific Committee for Research and the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux's embroidery consultant. I am also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, London; the Royal Historical Society and the Royal School of Needlework.

I have published my work through both academic and popular channels. I also undertake interviews across media outlets and have been filmed for documentaries, particularly on aspects of the Bayeux Tapestry. Reaching wider audiences is extremely important to me and I do this by giving talks and lectures to audiences around the world. I teach early medieval embroidery via a number of institutions including the Royal School of Needlework and the Victoria and Albert Museum. I also use my YouTube channel 'Early Medieval Embroidery' as a means of keeping people up-to-date with my research and experimental embroidery projects.
