Peru Presidential Runoff Tightens into Dead Heat as Vote Count Continues
(MENAFN) Peru’s electoral authorities continued counting ballots late Sunday as the presidential runoff narrowed into an extremely close contest.
A nationwide quick count conducted by a polling firm indicated that Roberto Sanchez held 50.3% of the vote, while Keiko Fujimori followed closely with 49.7%, reflecting a virtual tie.
An exit poll released shortly after polling stations closed initially showed Fujimori ahead with 50.7% compared to Sanchez’s 49.3%, but later projections suggested the margin was shrinking rapidly as more results came in.
Speaking at a press conference in Lima, Fujimori urged caution in interpreting early figures.
“It would be irresponsible to define the result based on a sample such as the quick count, which uses approximately 1,000 polling station reports out of 99,000 nationwide,” said Fujimori. “We need to count every tally sheet. Whatever the results may be, we will accept them, and I hope my opponent will do the same.”
Representatives of her Popular Force party also called on supporters and election observers to closely monitor the process, urging them to “defend the vote” and “remain vigilant” as the official count continues to unfold.
